Following The Greatest Hero: A Life Transformed at Redwood Camp

This summer campers at Redwood Camp are at Hero Headquarters! They are learning what it means to be a truly great hero, by following the example of Jesus to serve others.

Throughout the week they are learning about humility, courage, compassion, sacrifice, and influence as they become more like the greatest hero ever, Jesus!

There are hundreds of stories of God working in the lives of campers this summer, but here is one of our favorites from a Redwood Camp counselor:

Going into the first week of summer I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I had a group of sixth grade guys, and they were about as wild and crazy as you could imagine. Of all my campers that week, Roland is the one who really stood out. He was a nice kid, but he had a lot of energy and struggled to focus all week during Bible study times. He had come to camp with a friend and, as I would later discover, did not have a background going to church.

One of the best parts of the week is getting to spend one-on-one time with each camper. As counselors, it gives us the chance to get to know them better, hear their story, and talk with them about God. During my one-on-one time with Roland, he told me that his family doesn’t go to church, but he considers himself a member of many religions. I asked him what he meant by that, and he said, “Well, in my family we celebrate all of the holidays, like Christmas, Hanukkah, and others, so I guess I’m part of all of the religions.” This was an interesting perspective, and I was excited for him to continue hearing about Jesus here at camp.

The rest of the week went well, but Friday night something incredible happened. In our last huddle together as a cabin I had the chance to explain to all my campers that Jesus loves them, that He is our Lord and Savior, that He died for us, and sacrificed His life for us. Roland started to cry. He had never heard this. Before coming to camp, he had just assumed he was religious because he celebrated holidays.

When I asked if anyone wanted to commit their life to Christ, Roland enthusiastically said “Yes!” and we prayed together asking Jesus into his heart.

I was so excited and thankful to see God do this amazing work in Roland’s life. He took a child who knew almost nothing about Him, and totally transformed him!

Please continue to pray for the campers who have come to Redwood Camp this summer!
